10 ways to play a C major scale on guitar

As inspired by Jack Gardiner during his masterclass in Singapore

During Jack Gardiner’s visit to Singapore, he demonstrated multiple ways to play a C major scale. What made his Singapore stop different from the neighbouring ones was that it was conducted as a masterclass. This allowed participants to ask questions directly, and Jack took the time to answer them in depth. While I had several questions in mind, I was glad someone else asked something similar, which led to an impromptu 10-minute guitar lesson for everyone.

The C major scale on guitar is where you should start.

One audience member asked about the best way to learn the Dorian scale. He suggested starting a C major scale from the second degree. Jack Gardiner quickly pointed out something important. The guitar may seem like a pattern-based instrument. However, it is crucial to understand the underlying harmony. This must be done in every position on the fretboard.

He then went on to demonstrate the C major scale across multiple positions and combinations on the fretboard. Even before he mentioned it, I was reminded of those early Frank Gambale instructional videos that left such a strong impression on me. It reinforced a simple truth, mastering basic scales in all possible combinations is incredibly important, yet so often overlooked.
